He keeps saying it's cheaper to just buy something 'merican and throw a supercharger on it. Sure it might be cheaper, but it's also 1. Been done so many times it's not even funny and 2. won't handle nearly as well no matter what you do
Oh, but what about Corvettes he says. Corvettes couldn't handle worth shit until the C6, if I'm not mistaken, father. "But my C4 handled pretty well" yeah sure, compared to the Cavalier you had before it, and the Lexus LS400 you had after it, I'm sure it did, but compared to my car, it's nothin. Driving isn't all about speed, it's about how the car handles and feels at speed. It's not all about drag times, dad, unlike what you think. I care about how my car makes me feel, not how fast it goes in a straight line. Also, 40hp out of an intake+headers+exhaust isn't anything to scoff about, that's a pretty good gain for those three parts.
He just expects to spend 3 grand and have a 10 second car. It's frustrating. Especially because I'm the one that's paying for the parts, but he is the one that is "approving them".

I'm the one that's paying for the parts
At this point I drop the ever wonderful 'shut the fuck up dad'.

I would get a stern talking to and my mom would take my shit away.
Now really, I should explain. He owns the car, I'm slowly paying him for it, and I'm working for the parts. Because he owns the car still, he has a say, but he keeps dreaming it's a Corvette.

500 bucks for an intake (that still isn't here after 4+ months)
200 for headers (not awful)
700 for exhaust, new, 450 is the cheapest I found used.
To turbo it, it's like 7 grand for new parts, without labor.
If I found a kit someone took out of their car, maybe 3 grand.

That's kinda like my situation. Parents agreed to buy me a car for under 1000 so I found a 1970 Triumph 2000 250km away that had to be trailered back. Now I am working for my dad to pay off the car, tralier hire , and fuel for the Previa tow vehicle.

Forgive me for not remembering, but which engine do you have again? I want to say N/A 2JZ, but I could be wrong.

Get him to buy himself a corvette and then continue happily modding. If you pay for it you should do whatever you want with it. When I first got my E90 my parents wanted to have a say in everything I did for it.. Even though it was my car and everything would be purchased with my money. It was very annoying, and I ended up just doing what I wanted anyways. They didn't like it, but what could they do, I bought the car and the parts. I'm the one that drives it/washes it/maintains it. Funny thing is now they love how my car is lol....

Hey that sounds like my life (other than I own my own car). I want a go fast part for my trans am, my dad has to approve it since I borrow his money for parts (I never have that much cash on hand nor a card for internet purchases), if he doesn't approve of my want I complain and get in trouble with my mother.

N/A 2JZ is correct. It's a bitch to tune because N/A. I could do an Aristo Twin Turbo 2JZ swap but my dad isn't having it because "It's not stock". No shit sherlock

He can't get a Corvette. We don't have the room and my mom would flip out. I wish I could just buy the car off of him but I still owe him 11 grand or so.

I just wish there were more options to put more power in my car outside of some sort of bastardized LS swap.
My little W201 had it's M102 ripped from it due to an electrical fault and I put in a M103. I keep thinking "What if I put a M104" but at that point, why not buy a C36? i'm sure there's even a manual transmission that could match up with it.
Beyond that though, without looking into the rare of rare category of old tuner parts from 20 years ago and used iffy ones from across the ocean. I'm kind of out of luck.
Really though, my next step isn't power, it's finding a 5 speed without ruining a car right out.
![]() 01/13/2014 at 22:49 |

You've got my sympathies.
He's probably still thinking of older American cars where a cam swap, new valves/springs/heads, and brilliant carb tuning can run 400-500HP all day until the rotating assembly falls out at 7000rpm.
Saving your money to do a top-end swap with a junked (but still good) turbo 2JZ is definitely the smart way to go, screw whatever he thinks about stock VS modified.
Also, Corvettes don't have shit on anything with true 4-wheel-independent suspension and good tires. Compared 280Z or 280ZX to a similar-year C3/C4 Corvette and they are worlds apart in performance, trust me on that having driven both.

Sounds like maybe go fast parts should wait. If he still has that much in it, I can see where he is coming from.
![]() 01/13/2014 at 22:55 |

That's absolutely what he's thinking of, and I understand why. I wish it was just that easy now. For now I just want the headers/intake/exhaust. In the future, when I own the thing, I'll do some outrageous swap if I have the dosh. Oh and I forgot to mention, he thinks that power is the most important thing to do. Suspension upgrades? Nah. Chassis stiffening? Nah. Lighter and better looking wheels? NEVER SON THEY DON'T LOOK STOCK THEN! IT'S GOTTA BE A SLEEPER! Yeah ok dad.
![]() 01/13/2014 at 22:57 |

Well there's your problem. I've bought all my cars and paid for my insurance since day 1. Though, if I'm honest, I would have enjoyed the help, haha.

Handling wise?
![]() 01/13/2014 at 22:57 |

The problem is he wants go fast parts for it but he's complaining instead of doing.
![]() 01/13/2014 at 22:58 |

To be fair, when it comes to the 2JZ, anything that isn't a screaming, whistling, neon-glow candy-paint parade float car is considered a sleeper.
Power upgrades are the best way to make your car fast if you don't care about your car or your life.

The most car I could afford at the time would have been a $600 SAAB 9000 I found, which, although freaking awesome, my parents wouldn't let me get, so they paid for the car I have now, a Lexus IS300. Not bad.
![]() 01/13/2014 at 23:03 |
|
Exactly, I keep telling him that keeping it stock looking is okay with some cars, but an IS300 isn't exactly something that needs to be totally stock. Now I definitely want it to be clean and not stupid outrageous but not bone stock.
Something like this, but with different, preferably gray or silver, wheels, lowered a tiny bit, and that's about it unless I want Angel Eyes lol. And my car isn't red, it's black, but you get my point.

Time for Nitrous then. Only solution. (sarcasm) Well, I guess you're kinda stuck doing what you are already doing.

Gasket match the head and manifolds...
![]() 01/13/2014 at 23:22 |

Oh yeah I know I need to get some good gaskets. I'm not exactly sure where to find them, but I know I need them.
![]() 01/13/2014 at 23:28 |

You know what gasket matching is right?
It probably won't work on your car, more of a non-suggestion really.
![]() 01/13/2014 at 23:30 |

Yeah I had no idea what that was. All I know is I need gaskets that fit lol.

The C5, 6 & 7 share the same basic suspension and overall chassis layout.
Having tried a C5 Z06 and C5 vert, I can say C5s handle pretty damn decent.
They're sorta pieces of crap and also fun at the same time. The vert is a bit soft but still more chuckable than most cars. The Z06 is really quite good.
![]() 01/14/2014 at 11:51 |

If you want a fast car start with something fast.
![]() 01/14/2014 at 12:26 |

Pretty much. Same chassis, brakes, ls engine, aero. C6z would be an upgrade over an already good c5z.

You might be completely stupid if you think, "no matter what you do" an American car won't handle as well as your (what I'm assuming) BMW. That's just being ignorant on your part.
Also, a C4 Corvette was the first American production car to pull 1G on a skid-pad. Something I don't know that your BMW could do (could be wrong. I don't know what you drive really.) So yes, his Corvette did handle quite well. C4s aren't the nicest cars ever (that interior is God awful), but to say that they handle poorly is again a reflection of your ignorance.
And, I could be wrong and if so I apologize, but if your dad bought you this car (which is what I'm kinda getting from context clues) this whole thing SCREAMS of "MA THE MEAT LOAF." Very child-like.
Although I will concede that if you are the one paying for parts/installation then you shouldn't need his approval UNLESS he paid for the car and those parts might void the warranty. In such a case, yeah he should be able to tell you what to do.
EDIT: I'm an idiot and didn't read. You have an Is300. My bad about the parts about BMW.

![]() 01/14/2014 at 16:14 |

HP gains are more about % gained IMO. 40HP to an engine that has 500? Meh. To an engine that has 150? HUGE.
![]() 01/14/2014 at 16:21 |
|
Calm down bro. I do acknowledge that the C4 was a step in the right direction as far as handling, but still, my dad is concerned about drag times basically, and that's it. That's why I'm complaining about the handling of things.
![]() 01/14/2014 at 16:22 |
|
That is true. My car has 215hp. 40hp is a lot.
![]() 01/14/2014 at 16:25 |
|
Totally. And while intake, headers, and exhaust probably weren't the most bang for the buck (although I can't say that for sure obv), they are very stable upgrades that help increase the longevity of an engine as well.
For everyone doing it right (like yourself) there are 20 Honda kids twin-turbo'ing their shitbox CRXs, only to blow gaskets and whatnot 500 miles later.

BUT
VTEC YO
![]() 01/14/2014 at 17:07 |

lol.
In the defense of Honda (but not the stereotypical dipshits that drive them), VVT is the shit (and it irritates me that the Nissan RB25 had it, but the RB20 didn't).
That shot of whoshisface from F&F (Tokyo Drift I think?) with the VTEC meme never ceases to crack me up. I remember being in Jr. High, lusting after the GSR and Type-R Integras. We thought VTEC was the shit, even if we didn't know what it did, let alone what the acronym stood for.
*later* yep, found it:
![]() 01/14/2014 at 17:15 |

Actually VTEC is VVT-L
Variable valve timing with Lift (do you even?)
I don't know what lift does but it kicks in and you go faster. Lol
![]() 01/14/2014 at 17:25 |
|
VVT-L
V(1) : Variable - It changes...
V(2): Valve - ...the valves'...
T: Timing - ...duration spent open (IIRC...may also include dynamically advancing or retarding timing)...
L: Lift - ...and how far they open (aka how high they lift).
This occurs depending on different engine conditions, such as temperature, throttle position, O2 sensor readings, MAF readings, (potentially) boost pressure, etc.
The whole point is that you can be all seat-back-cruising and get decent gas mileage, but then when it's time to go VROOM VROOM, the cams adjust dynamically to provide better performance at the expense of economy.
Those of us without such luck (read: static duration and lift, possibly static timing) have to go all oldschool and change out the physical camshafts (or, at least the lobes that open the valves, but usually people swap out for full on aftermarket cams with lobes included AFAIK).

I've got VVT-I but not Lift.
